The unprecedented problems connected with the elimination of consequences of the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, as well as the formation of new social relations, made obvious the importance of applied psychology and social work in practice. Rector of the University, Doctor of Psychology, Professor S. Sedrakyan, considering the need to train relevant specialists as the matter of priority, founded “URARTU”; University of Practical Psychology and Sociology in 1991. Today the university is one of the leading universities having the state accreditation of the Republic of Armenia, the only specialized institution in the field of psychology, sociology and social work.
